Finished a New Log Cabin Quilt Top!

I wanted to share the new quilt top I finished last week. DH will be the recipient of this quilt when it's finished. I basted it yesterday so that it's ready to start quilting as soon as I finish my dad's quilt
which I have estimated to be completed by October 2, 2011. I still have about 20,000 hand quilted stitches to place in that one - 3 times as many as what I have done already. I want to have this new quilt finished by Christmas for hubby. Wish me luck!

This first set of pictures is the first traditional quilt I ever made.I hand quilted the leaf motif onto the large squares. The rest was machine quilted. I also made matching pillows and pillow shams as you can see.

Below is an appliqued quilt I made for the annual St. Jude/Hancock Fabric contest.

I made this pink and white quilt and pillow sham for my mother-in-law.

This was a special order dining room ensemble.

Another special order - I made four sets of the curtains, the tablecloth, placemats and 8 pillow covers like the one in the rocking chair on the left.

Customer pieced - I machine quilted this for her.

New Fabric and New Ideas

Hancock Fabric was having the most awesome sale yesterday so I had to take advantage of that. I've been in a very deep rut lately and suddenly this new fabric has all kinds of new rag quilt ideas running through my head. I have pictures of all my new fabric below. The lady who cut all of that for me was very kind. She also measured off what was left of a bolt of white flannel that I wanted.

Oh! And while I was there, a very sweet lady approached me asking what I make with my fabric. When I told her that I make mainly quilts she asked if I would make one for her granddaughter. Of course I will! I must say she didn't look like a grandmother though. It feels great to be back in the loop. Despite my bashfulness I really enjoy making nice custom items for people. She lives in the same suburb as I do and will call me this week (I think). She'll bring her fabric and binding and we'll select a pattern. Then I'll get right to work. I have come up with a fee of .01 per square inch as well as the price of any items I will have to supply such as thread or batting. She may have all of that as well. Although her quilt will be a traditional quilt and not a rag quilt, as long as we select a simple pattern I should be able to finish this within a month's time.

I've been looking through some of the patterns I've downloaded. I really like the Lemon Bars, Big Block and Sweet Strips patterns.

I'm using all of my resources to spread the word about the new writers that are needed for Creative Times Magazine. The details are below.

Creative Times Magazine is looking for writers to fill the Serious Business and Quick Tips columns. As writers for CTMag, your online business will be represented with your articles as well as on the Editors page at the following link: http://www.creativetimesmagazine.com/editors.php.

Articles are due every other month and must be 500 words or less. You can look through past issues to see what types of articles have been written for these columns at the archives link: http://www.creativetimesmagazine.com/archive.php.

If you're interested in applying for the positions, please send articles that we can use in the Sept/Oct 2011 issue. Please send your articles to sewpdw at charter dot net by July 15, 2011. This will give us enough time to select new writers in the event that several do apply. You may also email with any questions you may have.

You must be able to work on a tight schedule so if you're plate is already full, you may want to wait for another writing opportunity to come along when you have more time to commit to the position. The new writer will receive the writing deadline for each issue and you will also receive a few reminders up to the point of submitting your articles.

A Few Craft Updates

I got my current project up on the quilt rack that hubby and my older son made for me a few years ago. I'm excited that I'll be placing my first hand quilted stitch in this project in less than 5 minutes! New Fabric

I've done great not spending any money on new fabric the past few months, but when I found out about a new quilt shop that is only a few blocks from our house, I had to visit. And I guess the stress of getting the yard sale ready, being behind on the deep cleaning I want to do and all that type of stuff, I buckled and bought 1/2 yard cuts of the pictured fabric. It is so pretty! I couldn't help myself. It will eventually become something beautiful.

New Fabric for Dad's Quilt

Mom and I were finally able to get together yesterday and shop for fabric for Dad's new quilt. Below are the prints we selected. The top toille is what we chose for the backing. We have only about $85 invested in it. Hopefully I can make it look like a $200 or $300 quilt when it's finished. I got it all washed, dried and press last night. The plan is to start cutting the 3" squares out today. This quilt will actually be a traditional quilt. So after machine piecing the squares together, I'll hand quilt it as I stink at machine quilting. My goal is to have this ready for Father's Day. We'll see because I'm very slow at hand quilting.

That's the latest in my crafty life. I haven't progressed at all this week on the current rag quilt tutorial. So that's also part of my plan today among other things. Oh well. One does get behind if she sleep until 8:30 every day. I'll try to do better next week.

Cutting Rag Quilt Squares!

I decided this past week to just cut up a bunch of my stash into squares without worrying about counting them right now. I think this will be helpful later so that when I have time to quilt, I can put a few together quickly from the squares I've already cut. Below is what I've accomplished so far. From the scrap pieces, I also started cutting out ornament panels. I think this is what I'll do for the remainder of the year. Life is so busy right now but I can cut squares easily when I have a little bit of time here and there.

We're heading out tomorrow and I'm going to buy another bolt of flannel for backing. What you see in the foreground in the picture is all I have of that. I'll need lots more so I'll have enough squares cut for those new quilts I'm going to make after Christmas. I'll cut batting squares at some point too. All of this sounds like a good plan for now. I'll let you know after Christmas. Ü
